Methodology & criteria
True relative strength on stress days (idea: Ben Bennett's 'Down Day RS', here additionally sharpened at the sector level). A stress day is a day on which BOTH the overall market AND the stock's own sector closed down at least 0.5% — measured as the median daily return of all stocks in the universe or the sector, respectively. Counted over the last ~6 months is how many of these stress days the stock still closed GREEN on (ratio g/n in the Stress RS column). From this a percentile rating 1–99 within the universe. This scanner shows the strongest ~10% (rating ≥ 90) — stocks that get bought when everything else falls (often institutional accumulation). Liquidity filter price > $3, average $ volume > $2M; the rating is computed on unadjusted prices with a guard against jumps caused by reverse splits — the backtest on adjusted prices produces practically the same rating (correlation 0.9873). IMPORTANT: the backtest across 181 month-end dates comes out NEGATIVE. At the median the strongest decile returns −0.77% after twelve months against +8.32% for the weakest, the best portfolio returns 9.80% a year against 14.27% for the S&P 500, and during downturns the gap turns negative. This list is therefore a watchlist tool, not a buy list — the full calculation with every caveat is in the study.
Global filters: market cap of $50B or less (mega caps are cut from every scanner); 10- and 30-day ADR must be ≥ 1% (too little movement gets cut); names after a reverse split (distorted price history) are excluded.
