Politician trades

The STOCK Act (Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act) has required members of the U.S. House and Senate since 2012 to publicly disclose their personal securities transactions – not just their own trades, but also those made by spouses and dependent children. The logic is straightforward: lawmakers with access to non-public information from committee hearings, pending legislation, or agency briefings shouldn't be free to trade on it quietly. This page collects reported purchases and sales from official congressional disclosures and makes them searchable by politician.

Three details matter when reading the table. First, amounts never appear as exact figures, only as a legally defined range, such as $15,001 to $50,000; the law doesn't require anything more precise. Second, filers have up to 45 days to report a transaction, so a trade can surface here weeks after it actually happened. Third, the "owner" field shows who actually made the trade – often it isn't the lawmaker at all, but a spouse or child.

What this page can do: give you a continuously updated view of reported trades by politician, including buy or sell, amount range, trade date, and filing date. What it can't do: judge whether a transaction was appropriate or based on inside information. A reported trade is, on its own, evidence of nothing more than compliance with a legal disclosure rule – it isn't investment advice, and it isn't an accusation. The interpretation is yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act, passed in 2012, requires members of the U.S. Congress – along with their spouses and dependent children – to publicly disclose reportable securities transactions. The goal is to make transparent how lawmakers with access to non-public information handle their own stock trades.

The law itself doesn't require exact figures, only amount categories, such as $15,001 to $50,000. These ranges are the legally defined disclosure format – a more precise number simply doesn't exist in the official filings.

The STOCK Act gives filers up to 45 days after a transaction to report it. In practice, that means several weeks can pass between the actual trade date and its appearance on this page, depending on when the filing was submitted.

That can't be concluded from a single reported transaction. Disclosure only shows that a trade took place – it isn't evidence that any non-public information was used improperly. Whether members of Congress benefit from their information advantage has been debated publicly and politically for years, including proposals for an outright trading ban; this page documents the filings without settling that debate for you.

We'd advise against it. Because of the up-to-45-day filing lag and the range-only amounts, you don't know the exact price or timing of the original trade – and the price has often moved considerably since. This page provides information, not investment advice or a buy recommendation.

The large majority of filings are submitted electronically and are processed here. A small number of members still file as scanned paper documents; those can't be parsed automatically and are instead linked directly to the original filing.

Source

Official disclosure filings of the US Congress under the STOCK Act — the mandatory reports House members and senators file on their own securities transactions and those of their spouses and dependent children. Due within 30 days of learning about the transaction and no later than 45 days after the trade; amounts only as a statutory range.

These pages reproduce filed transactions. They are not investment advice, not a recommendation to buy, and not an accusation against the people named.
