Assessment

Our Rating

A journalistic assessment by our editorial team at the time of the deep dive — it rates the company, not the entry point. Not investment advice and not a solicitation to buy or sell.

Substance risk

We found at least one documented issue that threatens the company itself — regardless of how the stock is currently valued.

Why this colour

The brand is strong and demand is proven — that is not the issue. The rating is driven by the balance sheet: operations have not covered interest in any year since 2022 (interest coverage of about −0.6 in 2025), equity has shrunk 67 percent since 2019, and about two-thirds of owned property, equipment and intangible assets are already tied up as collateral. The 10-Q contains no going-concern warning, and according to the company, $2.2 billion of liquidity covers at least twelve months. What the next reports need to show:does the full-year margin guidance hold, do fuel prices fall, and does JetForward show up in earnings? The decision is yours.

What the thesis turns on

Assessment: Opportunities & Risks

JetBlue is a textbook example of how the bargain trap works: the stock traded below $3 in mid-October 2026, the planes are full, and Spirit’s exit opens growth in Fort Lauderdale. Behind that, however, stand six loss years, $8.48 billion of debt with $588 million of interest expense in 2025, and shareholders’ equity that has shrunk by two-thirds since 2019. Not investment advice.

Demand & brand

Second-quarter 2026 revenue +14.5 percent to $2.70 billion, unit revenue +10.9 percent, load factor 82.7 percent. In Fort Lauderdale, capacity grew nearly 40 percent after Spirit’s exit, with 11 percent higher unit revenue.

Profitability

Losses every year since 2020, $3.6 billion in total through 2025; another $566 million in the first half of 2026. In the second quarter of 2026, fuel expense rose by $407 million, more than revenue.

Debt & interest

$8.48 billion of debt as of June 30, 2026; interest expense of $588 million in 2025 against an operating loss of $368 million — interest coverage of about −0.6. About 67 percent of owned property, equipment and intangible assets are pledged or committed.

Equity & liquidity

Equity fell from $4.80 billion (2019) to $1.59 billion (June 30, 2026), −$533 million in the first half of 2026 alone. Liquidity of $2.2 billion plus an undrawn $600 million credit line; sufficient for at least twelve months, according to the company.

JetForward turnaround

By the company’s estimate, $470 million of cumulative incremental operating income through June 2026, targeting $850 million to $950 million a year by the end of 2027; 2028 target of at least $1.00 of EPS assuming jet fuel at $3.00 per gallon.

Worth Noting

JetBlue made our research list through the Reddit hype scan of Oct. 17, 2026. The latest periodic report is the 10-Q for June 30, 2026 (filed July 28, 2026, together with the earnings release and guidance); all filings through Oct. 17, 2026, were reviewed (8-Ks of Aug. 27 and Sept. 10, 2026, Schedule 13D/A of Aug. 20, 2026, S-8 of July 31, 2026, Form 4 through Oct. 2, 2026). The 10-Q for Sept. 30, 2026, had not been filed as of Oct. 17, 2026.

Market value (about $1.1 billion) calculated from 377,312,181 shares (10-Q, as of June 30, 2026) and the Oct. 16, 2026 close ($2.93). Cross-check with the sale price in the insider filing (Form 4) of Sept. 30, 2026 ($4.29): about $1.6 billion. An older market value from the fundamental data (as of July 2026, about $2.2 billion) was not used because it predates the price decline.

Interest coverage, enterprise value (market value plus debt of $8.48 billion minus cash and investment securities of $2.17 billion), book equity per share and the sum of losses 2020–2025 are our calculations. Multi-year figures 2019–2023 come from the XBRL data of the respective annual reports; 2019 debt ($2.35 billion) includes finance lease obligations.

Adjusted operating margin and unit costs excluding fuel are company metrics without a U.S. GAAP definition. JetForward contributions ($470 million cumulative) are management estimates, not audited figures.

Valuation

P/E ?Price-to-earnings ratio: how many years of profit does the stock cost? The lower, the cheaper the valuation. No earnings means no P/E. –
Forward P/E ?P/E based on expected earnings for the next 12 months instead of past earnings — analysts' bet on the future. 6.3
PEG ?P/E divided by expected earnings growth: puts valuation in relation to growth. Around 1 is considered fair, well above that is pricey. 0.9
P/B ?Price-to-book ratio: market value relative to book equity. 0.6
P/S ?Price-to-sales ratio: market value divided by annual sales. Important for companies that aren't (yet) profitable. 0.1
EV/EBITDA ?Enterprise value including debt (EV) relative to operating profit before depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) — more comparable than P/E because debt counts too. Extreme values arise when EBITDA is near zero. 30.2
Price/FCF ?Market value divided by free cash flow: how many years of freely available cash does the stock cost? More honest than P/E because cash flow is harder to dress up. –

Profitability

Gross Margin ?Gross margin: what's left of sales after only direct production costs are deducted — the product's pricing power. 20.2%
EBIT Margin ?EBIT margin: operating profit as a percentage of sales — the earning power of the core business before interest and taxes. -10.0%
Net Margin ?Net margin: what's left of sales as profit after ALL costs, interest, and taxes. -9.3%
Return on Equity ?Return on equity: how much profit does the company generate per year on shareholders' equity? -33.5%
Return on Assets ?Return on assets: how much profit the company generates from its total assets (equity and debt combined). -2.1%

Balance Sheet & Safety

Equity Ratio ?Equity ratio: equity as a share of total assets. The higher, the more resilient the balance sheet. 10.9%
Debt/Equity ?Leverage ratio: financial debt divided by equity. Under 1 is generally seen as solid; negative values mean negative equity. 5.2
Altman Z″ ?Edward Altman's bankruptcy early-warning score. We use the Z″ variant, built from four balance-sheet ratios — it is designed for service companies and non-manufacturers and uses book value instead of market value. On that scale: below 1.1 = danger zone, 2.6 and up = safe zone, in between a grey area. Because the classic Altman Z is calculated differently, the two numbers are not directly comparable. The formula does not fit banks, insurers, or real-estate stocks. 2.78
Piotroski ?Balance-sheet health check by Joseph Piotroski: 9 yes/no criteria on profit, cash flow, leverage, and efficiency. 7+ is very solid, under 3 is a red flag. 3 out of 9

Sales Growth Last Quarter ?Sales growth in the most recently reported quarter versus the same quarter a year ago (YoY). 4.70%
EPS Growth Last Quarter ?Growth in earnings per share in the most recently reported quarter versus the same quarter a year ago (YoY). -82.90%

What Do These Terms Mean?

EPS (Earnings Per Share):
Quarterly profit divided by the total share count — how much of the profit works out to a single share.
YoY (Year over Year):
Change versus the same quarter a year ago — this is how you compare without seasonal distortion (e.g. the holiday shopping season).
Sales:
All revenue for the quarter, before any costs are deducted — the top line of the income statement.
Net Margin:
What percentage of sales is left over as profit in the end. Negative means the company is posting a loss.
OCF (Operating Cash Flow):
The cash that actually flows into the till from the core business during the quarter — harder to dress up than book profit.
FCF (Free Cash Flow):
Operating cash flow minus capital expenditures — the money that's genuinely free to use, say for paying down debt, buybacks, or dividends.

Valuation

What is priced in?

Free cash flow over the past twelve months is negative, which rules out a serious reverse calculation. Any growth rate only makes a negative cash flow more negative; no present value comes out of it. What the price reflects here is therefore not a stream of cash flows, but the expectation that there will be one at all.

A simplified model calculation — not a forecast and not a recommendation.
