Assessment

Our Rating

A journalistic assessment by our editorial team at the time of the deep dive — it rates the company, not the entry point. Not investment advice and not a solicitation to buy or sell.

Open questions

The business works in principle, but one material question is open. As long as it stays open, our findings do not carry a quality verdict.

Why this colour

Yellow, because the turnaround is unproven: revenue collapsed 36 percent in fiscal 2026, gross margin halved, new customers contributed only about 1 percent of subscription revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, and guidance for fiscal 2027 is lower still. It is not red, because no substance risk is documented: $651.1 million in cash and securities with no financial debt, positive operating cash flow in the first quarter, and no going-concern doubt. At a little more than five times revenue, the market is mainly pricing in hope for the turnaround. The decision is yours.

What the thesis turns on

Assessment: Opportunities & Risks

C3.ai is a textbook case of the captain trap: founder Thomas Siebel has been back since May 2026 and invested $68.8 million of his own money. But revenue fell 36 percent in fiscal 2026, almost no revenue came from new customers in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, and guidance sits below last year. $651 million in cash buys time for a turnaround — it hasn’t been proven yet. Not investment advice.

Revenue trend

FY2026 revenue (ended 04/30/2026) $250.3M after $389.1M (−36%); Q1 FY2027 $52.4M (−25%); FY2027 guidance $210M to $240M.

New business

Only about 1% of Q1 FY2027 subscription revenue from new customers (prior year 32%); remaining performance obligations $200.0M (07/31/2026) after $203.1M (04/30/2026).

Liquidity

$651.1M in cash and securities (07/31/2026), no financial debt; operating cash flow Q1 FY2027 +$2.1M after −$190.2M in FY2026.

Costs & dilution

Gross margin FY2026 31% after 61%; stock-based compensation Q1 FY2027 $59.2M on $52.4M of revenue; weighted-average share count +14.5% year over year.

Leadership & control

Founder Siebel CEO again since 05/08/2026, 48.9% of voting power (07/31/2026), $68.8M of his own money for an option exercise on 06/01/2026; class action over his health refiled after dismissal.

Worth Noting

C3.ai made our research list through our in-house Reddit hype scanner (Reddit hype run of November 7, 2026).

The fiscal year ends April 30; FY2026 = May 2025 through April 2026, Q1 FY2027 = May through July 2026. The 10-Q for the quarter ended October 31, 2026 had not been filed as of November 7, 2026.

Quarterly revenue for Q4 FY2025 ($108.7M) and Q4 FY2026 ($51.6M) from the earnings release (8-K, Exhibit 99.1) of June 3, 2026; other quarters from the 10-Qs and XBRL data.

Market cap calculated independently: 160,779,856 shares (157,279,864 Class A + 3,499,992 Class B, 10-Q cover page, 08/31/2026) × $11.69 close (11/06/2026) = $1.880B; matches the fundamental data. Revenue for the last four quarters: 75.1 + 53.3 + 51.6 + 52.4 = $232.4M.

Siebel’s option exercise: 6,166,667 × $11.16 = $68.8M (Form 4 of 06/03/2026, transaction 06/01/2026, options expiring 08/26/2030). Sales under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan (adopted 09/20/2024) between 05/15 and 07/15/2026: 1,416,208 shares (Forms 4 of 05/19, 06/15 and 07/16/2026).

Short interest (about 42.2M shares, roughly 28% of the free float) and analyst ratings from fundamental data retrieved 11/07/2026; the data does not state a reporting date.

Valuation

P/E ?Price-to-earnings ratio: how many years of profit does the stock cost? The lower, the cheaper the valuation. No earnings means no P/E. –
Forward P/E ?P/E based on expected earnings for the next 12 months instead of past earnings — analysts' bet on the future. 0.0
PEG ?P/E divided by expected earnings growth: puts valuation in relation to growth. Around 1 is considered fair, well above that is pricey. –
P/B ?Price-to-book ratio: market value relative to book equity. 2.6
P/S ?Price-to-sales ratio: market value divided by annual sales. Important for companies that aren't (yet) profitable. 8.1
EV/EBITDA ?Enterprise value including debt (EV) relative to operating profit before depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) — more comparable than P/E because debt counts too. Extreme values arise when EBITDA is near zero. -2.3
Price/FCF ?Market value divided by free cash flow: how many years of freely available cash does the stock cost? More honest than P/E because cash flow is harder to dress up. –

Profitability

Gross Margin ?Gross margin: what's left of sales after only direct production costs are deducted — the product's pricing power. 29.1%
EBIT Margin ?EBIT margin: operating profit as a percentage of sales — the earning power of the core business before interest and taxes. -186.3%
Net Margin ?Net margin: what's left of sales as profit after ALL costs, interest, and taxes. -192.1%
Return on Equity ?Return on equity: how much profit does the company generate per year on shareholders' equity? -59.8%
Return on Assets ?Return on assets: how much profit the company generates from its total assets (equity and debt combined). -31.2%

Balance Sheet & Safety

Equity Ratio ?Equity ratio: equity as a share of total assets. The higher, the more resilient the balance sheet. 80.1%
Debt/Equity ?Leverage ratio: financial debt divided by equity. Under 1 is generally seen as solid; negative values mean negative equity. 0.01
Altman Z″ ?Edward Altman's bankruptcy early-warning score. We use the Z″ variant, built from four balance-sheet ratios — it is designed for service companies and non-manufacturers and uses book value instead of market value. On that scale: below 1.1 = danger zone, 2.6 and up = safe zone, in between a grey area. Because the classic Altman Z is calculated differently, the two numbers are not directly comparable. The formula does not fit banks, insurers, or real-estate stocks. 2.99
Piotroski ?Balance-sheet health check by Joseph Piotroski: 9 yes/no criteria on profit, cash flow, leverage, and efficiency. 7+ is very solid, under 3 is a red flag. weak 1 out of 9

Growth

Sales Growth Last Quarter ?Sales growth in the most recently reported quarter versus the same quarter a year ago (YoY). -25.50%
EPS Growth Last Quarter ?Growth in earnings per share in the most recently reported quarter versus the same quarter a year ago (YoY). 0.00%
Sales Growth (Year) ?Sales growth in the last fiscal year versus the year before. -35.67%
Forward Sales Growth ?Sales growth analysts expect over the next 12 months — an estimate, not a guarantee. -77.25%
Forward EPS Growth ?Earnings-per-share growth analysts expect over the next 12 months — an estimate, not a guarantee. 43.70%

Quality & Screener

Stage ?Weinstein phases 1 through 4: 1 = basing, 2 = uptrend (the only buy phase), 3 = topping, 4 = downtrend. Measured against the 30-week line. 4

EPS Rating ?Earnings growth rating from 1 to 99 versus all stocks — high values mean above-average earnings growth. 42
Fundamental Rating ?Our own Fundamental Rating: 0 to 100 points with an A+ to F grade. 50 points is the average across the universe, 100 the best possible score. It scores growth, earnings surprises, analyst estimates, margins, cash flow, and balance-sheet safety — every stock percentile-ranked against all others. Grades: A+ from 95, A from 75, B from 55, C from 45, D from 25, E from 5, F below. D (34 out of 100)

Highlighted are things our editorial team noticed: green = stands out as strong, red = deserves a closer look. No single metric is a verdict on its own — always read it in context.

What Do These Terms Mean?

EPS (Earnings Per Share):
Quarterly profit divided by the total share count — how much of the profit works out to a single share.
YoY (Year over Year):
Change versus the same quarter a year ago — this is how you compare without seasonal distortion (e.g. the holiday shopping season).
Sales:
All revenue for the quarter, before any costs are deducted — the top line of the income statement.
Net Margin:
What percentage of sales is left over as profit in the end. Negative means the company is posting a loss.
OCF (Operating Cash Flow):
The cash that actually flows into the till from the core business during the quarter — harder to dress up than book profit.
FCF (Free Cash Flow):
Operating cash flow minus capital expenditures — the money that's genuinely free to use, say for paying down debt, buybacks, or dividends.

Valuation

What is priced in?

Free cash flow over the past twelve months is negative, which rules out a serious reverse calculation. Any growth rate only makes a negative cash flow more negative; no present value comes out of it. What the price reflects here is therefore not a stream of cash flows, but the expectation that there will be one at all.

A simplified model calculation — not a forecast and not a recommendation.
